The Daily Wire is widely known for its news commentary shows and conservative leaning bias in the world of politics but over the last few years they have branched out into the realm of culture and entertainment with a few full length feature films including the latest installment titled Terror on the Prairie starring former Disney star Gina Carano.
This film is meant as the rebirth of Gina Carrano's career after her abrupt cancelation from the Star Wars series The Mandalorion over a so called controversial Instagram post referencing the Holocaust of WW2. Disney, trying to save face with the woke social warriors, fired her from the show and not long after, she signed on with The Daily Wire to star in this film. Along with well known actor/director Nick Searcy, Carano and the Daily Wire deliver a dark and gritty western filled with cruelty and gruesome violence that will captivate you while encapsulating just how hard life on the praire was for a mother and wife.
Carano plays Hattie McAlister, the wife of Civil War veteran Jeb McAlister , living on the frontier of Montana, earning every breath of survival for themselves and their adolescent son and infant daughter. The movie opens with a man being hunted down on the open praire by a gang of what appears to be bounty hunters. After the catch up to the fleeing man and torture him a bit, their leader, a Captain Miller, quotes a passage from the Bible before he scalps the assumed criminal. Captain Miller and Hattie are the two main characters in this film, your basic hero vs villain scenario.
It's almost 35 minutes into the film before we learn why Captain Miller and his band of deviant miscreants have happened upon the McAlisters homestead and intruded on their lives. At first it seems to be by coincidence but it's not, there is a purpose. Revenge. Now, I don't want to give too much away in this review but I will say that Miller is the only one of the villains with true motives behind their actions.
Captain Miller and his gang are out to find Jeb McAlister, a soldier for the Union during the Civil War, torture and kill him in a bloodthirsty revenge plot. What they find at the McAlister homestead when they arrive is an obliging wife offering a hot meal and warm shelter. This is where the story starts to unfold, little by little, and where we first learn more about the main characters of the film. This is also where the violence starts to ramp up as Carano realizes the danger her family is in and takes control.
While these two characters each have their moments, the villain (Nick Searcy) dominates a majority of the dialogue throughout the movie, often quoting scripture in reference to his preacher father and devote religious upbringing. Our heroine (Carano) spends the beginning of the movie in quiet subservience to her veteran husband, questioning if she is cut out for frontier life having grown up in a wealthy family from a booming metropolis like St. Louis, where she would meet her future husband Jeb McAlister. Nick Searcy, being the seasoned veteran he is, gave a great performance as the Bible quoting villain Captain Miller, hell bent on getting his revenge against a group of men he feels is responsible for a great injustice. I don't want to give away what exactly fuels his revenge as I'm trying not to reveal too much about the film. Carano is great once the violence and mayhem starts but it's the beginning of the film that's that hardest to push through. The lack of dialogue her character has and the way she brings you through the hard everyday life out on the praire is rather bland. There is a scene early on where Carano has to help a band of Native Americans who have been gravely injured. I found this scene compelling because it reminded me that actions will always speak louder than words.
In conclusion, The Daily Wire says this movie is a western thriller instead of an action film and that's probably one of the few things they got right here. Carano isn't believable as the quiet frontier wife although she fit that heroine motherly role perfectly, her acting still needs improvement. I found the premise of the story intriguing but the way it was portrayed and acted out left much to be desired. Searcy was the most convincing of all the actors and that's probably because he's the most accomplished. If you are already a subscriber to the Daily Wire then I recommend watching this but if you haven't subscribed, I wouldn't recommend a subscription just for this movie, it's not that good. I would say that it's watchable but forgettable.
At least one sportsbook believes there is a good chance that Jimmy Garoppolo is NOT the starter for the Las Vegas Raiders at the start of the season and that it will in fact be the 🐐
